This is a blog about The Meadow Man, a feature length animation in the works By David Firth. This is mainly a solo project so it will take many years. Don't worry, this project is still alive!

The first motions

Hello my name is David and I make cartoons. I have made over fifty cartoons over the last few years using a variety of techniques and styles. Some were instant viral classics while others didn't really do much at all. As time has trodden on, I've exhausted ideas, series, characters and jumped from one thing to another more that I should have been allowed to. I've got almost finished, half finished and quarter finished cartoons clogging my mammoth hard drive, countless scripts crammed into countless folders, online documents and five or six grotty notepads filled with ideas and bullet points that look more like odd words and phrases than anything remotely useable.

I used to think of an idea and make it quickly. That was fun but eventually I needed a new challenge. So I started trying to develop the scripts more, be more subtle, leave questions to be answered and put more effort into making my cartoons look more cinematic. The cartoons inevitably got longer and had more room to breathe. This satisfied me more but they weren't as punchy and instantly ridiculous/shocking/silly as before and many internet people lost interest. I started to feel my scripts and ideas were getting too drawn out and lengthy for internet shorts. I would start writing a cartoon and I'd actually have to force myself to stop just to keep it short - it was either that or I'd end up cutting stuff out that I probably wanted in there.

So one day I decided that I would just write a cartoon and not even think about how long it would be. I would actually cram all the stuff that I wanted in there and let it breathe and grow. Well that's been happening for a while now and so I must officially announce that I am working towards a feature length animation - one that I will try and get screened at various places and that I hope to release on DVD. I intend to do this almost entirely on my own. I will probably employ people to help me with various things but I want to keep the process very similar to how I would go about creating an internet short. The working title appears to be "The Meadow Man" but I can't imagine it'll stay as that - it's just the title of a short story I wrote a few years ago from which part of my feature will be based.

This doesn't mean I am done with internet shorts, it's just a new challenge that I need to attempt. This will not be Salad Fingers the movie or the entire story of Spoilsbury Toast Boy. It will be something new. The current status is that I have chunks of the script all over the place and a basic structure diagram. I haven't really done much to it over the last couple of months due to all the work I took on around Christmas but this post marks the point where I really get to work. I will hopefully update with every significant development and maybe even some videos too. If you have read all of this then thank you. I didn't realise I had this much to say until I started typing. If you have any questions I will gladly answer them. Summary: I am making an animated feature film.

  5. It's great to see you bravely take on a project of this magnitude. I can't even start to imagine the places your unique style and storytelling will reach, given the space of a feature length to develop. I can hardly wait!

    Good luck,
    Eyal.

  6. hey david, can't wait to see it. are you going to try to track the entire process? it's always a real treat to get a glimpse of how an artist puts their work together, so i hope you're going to make some posts with sketches or ideas from time to time.

    best of luck!

  7. To Ulrik: If i do release it as a DVD it should be deliverable anywhere in the world from an online order.

To Scott: I'm going to track as much as I can. I mean a lot of it won't be too interesting to read about but I'll try and record anything that may be of interest.

  8. A bold move sir.
Tis hard to commit to such a bid and my hat makes tip front to just the idea.
Should you wish for any musical patronage I'd be happy to oblige - but I'm sure you've probably got that covered : )

Try not to sell out (I doubt you will).

I hope it all goes well.

  10. There are a few venues around here in Rochester that would probably be interested in screening this - The Little Theater and the University of Rochester come instantly to mind.

I would love to help you get this piece screened at these places if you're interested.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hey thanks TEST, it's very early days but I'll be willing to try getting screened anywhere I can. I'll probably start thinking about that when it's done or nearly there though.

  12. I've been watching and (although more recently) listening to your material not long after you released the second Salad Fingers. It's very lifting to see you becoming so successful with your art and now creating such a lengthy and in-depth animation. Best of luck to you, sir.

Dave, did you get my long-ish, identical messages from gmail/ youtube?

    Just want to know,

    THANKS!!!

  15. Finally! I have no doubt this is the start of something big.

I've been a huge fan of your work ever since I saw the first Salad Fingers, and I love the experimental stuff as well. I'm also a professional Flash developer, so if you nee any help coding stuff - let me know!

I'm not gonna post my proper mail address online, but I'll probably read it eventually if you send mail to qwaxz at hotmail dot com.

  16. Good lad David.. I don't think you should give up on the PodCasts either.. I think they're the funniest sketches I've ever heard, plus you can listen to them a few times and pick up some extra quips thrown in there :)
I could definately see you and ahhhh Crust on TV some day, even if you were Sandy Scawthorpe or Colin and Craig... :D

Seriously, E4 is your calling.. Plus you;ve got a bit of BBC backing from that lumpy faced pedo lookalike (yet hilariously funny) Charlie Brooker.

That's gotta be better pay and more fun than a 9-5 surely....

    ReplyDelete
  17. This is the best news I've heard all week. I've been wondering why the updates haven't been coming as quickly of late. Now I know why, and I'm certain it will be worth the wait. Thank you!

  18. I cannot wait. This is going to be tremendous.

  21. You'll be able to get distribution no matter what you do, you have a fanbase.

Why not use a system where you can buy your movie online? You could make it cheaper than a DVD and you would see all of the profit.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Long or short story, I always liked your cartoons, whatever the topic was.Greetings from Estonia.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thanks a lot for the update. This sounds really exciting and ambitious. The only discouraging part is the wait, but no matter. Any information or content is genuinely appreciated, look forward to your words.

    Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I love your cartoons. You are the best cartoonist ever... seriously. No one does stuff like you.

I understand how.... the creative process isn't easy. There's always the desire to PUSH yourself, do more, harder, more complex stuff, and it unintentially loses the punchyness and free expression of the early stuff when you didn't care about making it perfect. It's hard to resist this.

But on the other hand... sometimes it's like an internal hidden desire to do something special and different, maybe not short and punchy, but worthwhile, and you are training yourself up to it. Maybe this is the thing you were training yourself for.

Honestly... the world needs more David Firths!

Good luck with the recruitment drive! I wish I could help but I'm a measly programmer, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Maybe you should do what South Park creators did...

at first their cartoons took them ages to do. Then they got better gear, and a team to help them. Honestly I don't know what software they use, but they can churn out an episode in 1 or 2 days.

I'm sure... if you had some setup like theirs... you could make so many cartoons you could sell them, like... get it on a major TV channel or something. It could be like the monty python of cartoons :) the only thing you can trust is that it will be wierd and awesome.

  26. Go Davey, Go!

And don't forget to pay those Tuition Fees W270.

  27. It's refreshing to see not only a fellow developing animator, but my favorite animator facing such a real and groundbreaking challenge. I was listening to Waller FM today and felt rather at home, which is the same feeling that any of your other works provide for me. If there's anything I'd be able to do to help, I'll do it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I can imagine that this is going to be something amazing and inspiring to me. Your work is the probably the most incredible thing I've ever got into.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh, one more thing. What are your plans for music and overall sound design, if you have any so far?

    ReplyDelete
  30. This comment has been removed by the author.

  31. Are you going to make it all in flash?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Fantastic. I've always wanted to watch a David Firth animation that lasted over 10 minutes. Meadow man sounds like an interesting name, I wonder what it will be about. I can't wait for it to come out.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Great news and good luck! I'll take a few DVDs when then are available so I can distribute them to my friends.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Jack: I will probably do most of it in Flash, After Effects and Premiere with bits of stop-frame SLR animation thrown in.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Cyber Metell in the background image: Does this mean he'll be appearing in the film?
Or is the image of all the random notes you mentioned?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Will I be able to buy this film on iTunes?

    ReplyDelete
  37. will there be shetland ponies in it?

    ReplyDelete
  38. I actually think i once sent you an email regarding a project like this. As a fan of your work, I'm very excited about this project you're taking on. I cannot wait to see the finished film. I'm sure it will be great!
    best of luck to you!

  39. Go for it dude, I think your stuff is true art. It really speaks to me. For some reason I get that feeling of significance (for want of a better word) at times watching it.

Not to mention breaking my shit laughing talking to people about it. I'll be waiting!!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hey David, is this your attempt at finally hitting the big time? And if you do, what then? What's your goals with this is basically what I am asking.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Danny: Those are just a load of random scraps of paper I photographed. All the characters will be new.

Kat: Thousands of them. There'll be at least 10 in each shot.

3njoyit: Who knows? If it's possible and doesn't cost me too much to set up then yes.

Legotrip: I don't think I'll hit "the big time" any time soon, but I'll just be happy to have actually made a feature film. So my goal is just to make it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yay! Love the animations, and I am betting that I am going to love this. Keep it up, man!

    ReplyDelete
  43. this excites me. your work is the dark nether of the brain pan and beyond. brings it. i'll view it. and probably have a good thought or 2 the next few days of my life..

    ReplyDelete
  44. this pleases me. For the love of god and everything buttery, finish it finish it finish it. Don't let it fall behind and become another forgotten unfinished bitlet.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I don't think you are gonna read all the coments, but well I'm say this anyway. I've been watching your cartoons for about 4 years. I've just to say that they are great. I'm from a very far away country, and my english is not very good. Sometimes i have to watch your cartoons 3 or 4 times so i can understand what you're saying because Im not used to the english accent.(sometimes was easy because you added subtitles) Well I forgot what I was going to tell you but just let me say that you have some people here in my city that apreciate your talent. and im glad you haven't quit yet and you are still making some more cartoons. well my question is: I know that you are going to be very busy but if you have some time, and you are not doing nothing...could you add subtitles? If you can't I'll understand and I'll have to try harder to improve my english.

    Thank you

    Gerardo Caro

  46. it's great to hear this, good luck

    ReplyDelete
  47. I can't wait! I hope all goes well and that you have a good time making it :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Aside from trying to get it screened at festivals, do you intend to try screening it any other way? Such as, finding small venues and setting it up to show it as if it were in a cinema? There's plenty of places around here that would be good for that, but seeing as I'm in Australia that won't be much use for you.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Sweet! I'm really looking forward to seeing the completed film.

    ReplyDelete
  50. You are an artist. You just have to do, what you absolutely have to do.
I can't wait to see, where you are heading at. But you know, I have to...

    Best wishes.

    ReplyDelete
  51. This is intense. I will indeed spread the word.
And you speak about people losing interest when you're cartoons got longer...I personally find the the longer ones more intriguing and in depth.
Instead of watching a film, I can quite happily sit in bed with a bowl of popcorn and delve unequivocally into your extensive catalogue.

You are a way of life.

    That is all

    ReplyDelete
  52. Very nice. I'll chop my head off for you in acknowledgement.

    ReplyDelete
  53. It's difficult to do something with so much work by yourself. I would hate to see you get discouraged, so maybe you should post progress very periodically, say once a week or at least once a month, so that your fans know what's going on and can encourage you.

Will you at least let us know when you start?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Man, for me Your work is as great as H.R. Giger's. I'm from Poland and I'm Your fan for a long time so I'll d e f i n i t e l y buy that DVD. Good luck, man, I'm sure that will be epic thing.
    Cheers.

  55. I think these are great news and I'm really looking forward to this. Also, I totally understand your disenchantment with your past serials and your reluctance to renew them. I've been in very similar circumstances as you (albeit music instead of films) but, you know art is art and art is pain.

    Greetings from Iceland.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Having watched your various endeavours over the past few years, I can only say I'm very, very much looking forward to this.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I can see your frustration with Internet people wanting an entire alternate world to resolve in all of 3 minutes. Good luck with this new venture, hopefully I'll have more than 20p by the time it rolls out so I can buy it.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Hi Dave, these are really good news. I know you will come out with something stunning. You are a true artist, not only as an animator, but also make wonderful compositions with almost every shot, the music is just perfect and so are the voices.
I know it's going to take a looong time to get done, but perseverance is the only help when you get stuck, and surely you're going to make it through more easily if you program yourself on this.
I'm nothing more than just another fan, but I would really be happy to help when you need it. I'm an art student, make drawings, prints and painting, and if anytime you want to see sketches for scenarios or supporting characters, i'll love to do it.
Just in case you're interested: http://www.flickr.com/jpacuna/

    Keep going.

  59. I'm looking forward to this for sure, I really dig your style. I trust the soundtrack will be awesome as well.

  60. wow! how exciting!! (laconic, but precise.)

    ReplyDelete
  61. David, it's great you're doing this. I have always hoped, since I saw my first David Firth cartoon, that some day you would start making movies. I truly hope that this takes you places. I would love to be able to see trailers on TV some day, for a movie created by David Firth. Your mind is really unique. Best of luck.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I think your work is fantastic and I hope this film makes money for you so that I can look forward to seeing a long career of your work. I will work on arranging a showing at my university when it is done.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Me so very happy. Thanky you so much.!

    ReplyDelete
  64. I've been watching your cartoons since 2004. And I knew it would eventually lead to this. I also think its funny to see all these people offering to help when you said you wanted it to be a solo project. What on earth are they gonna do if Crust isn't even helping you?

    ReplyDelete
  65. this is a very ambitious goal, i wish you the best of luck, and hopefully maybe will be able to witness a theatrical release.

i don't know if the world is ready for one of your creations on the big screen yet, but i know it would be a brilliant day in history.

    ReplyDelete
  66. ah david, i've been following your work since the beginning. i enjoyed the podcasts in the summer - i slip waller fm cds in my mates car and pretend it's a real radio station. whilst it saddens me that your work is less frequent these days, i'm prepared to wait for this project (:

    ReplyDelete
  67. Best of luck man, you are pretty much my favorite artist of any kind.

    ReplyDelete
  68. cant wait man you are an e-genius will be buying the dvd as soon as its out

    ReplyDelete
  70. I look forward to this with baited broccoli and a smattering of blue nun.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Bravo chief!

Rest assured that your creations have spread around the world like a luvverly contagion. I was besmirched by the rusty spoon years ago and the words 'fat' and 'pie' (eek don't forget the dash) are being whispered in New Zealand's back alleys as I type...

    dont forget the dash...

If you have any very specific ideas for the music in this, on any part, and cant find anyone to hit it right on what you want, im a master mixer and i play a variety of instruments, so i can make you whatever sound you need, and ill hit it perfect.
Like people above this said you probably have someone awesome like the man behind apex twin or something already, but if you want to try me out anyways, any style, made unique, ill fit your stuff!

One way or another, im pumped to see this!

  76. Good luck! I've been a fan of everything you've done for a long time through newgrounds. I love it! Keep at it, you do amazing stuff!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Greetings from Estonia, David.

There are tons of potential in the shorts, such as the four cartoons for "Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe". I'd love to see that kind of energy run free in a longer film. It would definetly be worth the wait.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Sweet! Been a fan of your animations for a good few years now and cant wait to see something where you've really let yourself just keep on going.
The only problem now is the waiting..

    ReplyDelete
  79. Fantastic news! I'm sure you'll have no problems with making a feature length film, as your videos are already cinematic enough.

    Good luck anyway

    ReplyDelete
  80. Are people in England better writers?

    ReplyDelete
  81. I always did like your videos. However I think the ones you did in 2007 and 08 were best, especially burnt face man. Never cared much for Salad fingers or the strange scary stuff, it scared me, as you would imagine.

Pulch the good times was extremely funny as well. Especially the end with the burnt yoghurt bit, that made me and my brother laugh for ages, and that's damn hard to do.

  87. Mr. Firth, I have a question for you. My name is Adam. I am 16, and
have loved your animations for a long time. I am a musician and have
sent you some stuff to see if you would like to use it, but I guess it
just got lost under all of the spam and jar kittens. Anyway, since you
said you would answer questions here, I would like to ask if you could
use any music for this project or any other, because I really want to
record some music for you. Please let me know. Thanks.

    -Adam.

  88. early days i know, but if it is indeed released onto dvd, where would it be sold? it certainly would be something i'd like to own. secondly how much would it be? i know for a fact that hardcore fans would be willing to pay good money =)
i also want to say thank you so much for doing what you do, your cartoons seem to resonate with so many viewers. you are a brilliant man =D
    thanks again

    Will.

  89. Hey, this is exciting news! Your animations truly are things of beauty. While I'm here, I should also say thanks for Yorkshire to New York. I bought it on iTunes a few weeks ago and those tunes are pretty permanently in my head :) I think you should do an Aphex Twin style ambient/techno album sometime, but appreciate you're a busy chap.

You should put up a Pay Pal donation button - I'd send you a few quid to help you do your thing.

    ReplyDelete
  90. The Meadow Man does seem like a good title, I would have to say.

    ReplyDelete
  91. hey david, im a bit worried about you saying how your longer cartoons are making people lose interest...i can't wait until this come out...but please dont stop the longer "shorts" such as sock 4 :socklops

but i thought this was a seperate thing, your going to keeping some characters from spoilsbury toast boy??

    ReplyDelete
  92. > I think you should do an Aphex Twin style ambient/techno album sometime

Completely forgot about Locust Toybox. Not sure how you do it, but I'm very glad you do.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Im very excited about this. There is just one thing I hope does not happen. I hope there arent too many questions after its over. I expect you to make it very cryptic but I hate watching movies that have no sequel but dont really answer everything. But when I watch this I will not be expecting to understand everything so thats not too bad.
Like Men From Up The Stairs, no matter how many times I watch that, I cannot for the life of me figure out what its about.
I do hope that any seemingly unanswered questions are in the movie itself, even if theyre incredibly hard to find.

But either way, I am extremely excited about this... also, I dont know why anyone wouldhave lost interest in your stuff, its still brilliant. Except for Episode 8 of Burnt Face Man, that was very disappointing.
But I do hope you make more BFM.

    ReplyDelete
  94. i love your work.. im really looking forward to it :)

    ReplyDelete
  95. Skull-Fire said, "Men From Up The Stairs, no matter how many times I watch that, I cannot for the life of me figure out what its about."

Well, if those hair-styles are to be believed, I would say that film is a metaphor for someone who finds it hard to make the little brown fishes.

  96. You're a hero man, i'd love to read some literature (like short stories) from you too, your art inspires me!

    ReplyDelete
  97. David,
you've always had a solid fan-base of people who arn't simply looking for another Salad Fingers. I've definitely seen encouraging changes in your art style and story telling over the years.
I'm very curious to see where this new project will go..

    ReplyDelete
  98. i think you will cause a major revolution in cinema, and possibly a new kind of foot odor. i would attempt to shake your hand in dreams tonight but we all know how dangerous that can be "/

  101. wow, as a true fan of yours I can safely say that a feature length animation would make my life complete! :P

PS, is it actually going to be on the fat-pie website? (bit of a silly question, but I don't want to miss out)

  102. i've just read adrian's comment from the 13th of feb, and i think a paypall donation thing would be awesome, most of your fans would probably be happy to give a few pounds each, tha's a nice amount of money to help you out on making this thing =)

  103. Long time fan from Chicago, nothing else compares to your work, at least nothing I have seen. Full lenght film - if not you, than who? You have earned it with your visionary talent and hard work. I can only hope to live long enough to see it.

The PayPal donation option would be great, take your mind off the realities even in a small part.

This is going to be big. Very big.

  104. OMG.
This is some of the best news I am likely to get this year.
BTW, THANK YOU for the stuff you have shown us so far. You have made an impact on so many people I know.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Have you decided to do a full length animation because of the hype of 'Waltz with Bashir"? Sound like its gonna be great.
My favourite part of Waller FM is the graham and terry show (you should make an animation about them) where th4ey talk about paying the fare to work or somethin. Anyway good luck with it all!

  110. yo Doki, you're my favorite animator on Newgrounds. I love every one of your flash submissions. I am excited to hear about this film you're producing!

Hopefully you can finish it within this year.. doubtful though eh. Doing artistic projects solo tend to take a long time without realizing how many hours had passed. anyway, the point is, you rule and i hope to see more of your work soon.

  111. The title sounds like its gonna be pulch-y!

look at all those comments above me... i had no idea people loved your work like i do.

It must feel great to be the one prominent creator in your specific hemisphere of art. I can't wait to immerse myself in the movie when its done. Your drive and sacrifices for your art are truly inspiring, and my expectations for the depth of this movie are really high. sorry.

    you own!

  113. Hello David,

I am a huge fan of yours and have watched many of your works, being intrigued with thr amount of experimental imagery that you use. I myself lean more towards the filming side of experimental imagery rather than animation, and this project sounds nothing more than intriguing and fascinating for your fans.

If I may ask a question. With all of your live action footage, such as the stop motion in some of your shorts and some of the live action footage, what type of equipment do you use? On board camera mics or proper booms? Normal Mini-DV cameras or HD? This would give me an insight into what I would need to achieve to possibly create my own films and animations.

    Best wishes for the future,
    Shak.

  114. Best wishes, you have given me another thing to look forward to.

I hope you put a Kazoo in it somewhere, even if just randomly in the background. That'd be astounding.

Either way, I am curious and desire to see the product that I'll inevitably cherish.

I don't know if you've got sponsorship, but if you don't and you need funds for making it, I'm sure lots of people would be happy to donate something if you put a button on the site - I know I would. I love your work and I want to see this film made.

  119. Firstly, I would like to say that you are such an inspirational person. The first of your animations I saw was Salad Fingers about four years ago. It was so twisted yet perfect I fell in love.

What sorts of people are you looking to employ? More importantly, what skills do they need to have?

    Best of luck to you!

  126. I can only hope that this cartoon will have your trademark eerie atmosphere to it. I am really looking forward to seeing it because all of your cartoons are like a breath of fresh air to me; you can't predict anything, they give you a sense of "something more than meets the eye" plus I find them strangely relaxing and inspirational. The creativeness in them is similar to that which you get when you dream, that random changing of scenery and dialogue that you would never think of when you are awake and I guess that's why i like them.

So, take your time and best of luck to you! (a fan from romania)

  127. Been watching your stuff for about 5 years now. You're absolutely mad, but in a great way. Best of luck as you embark on this endeavor. I hope it's worth every drop of sweat, blood, tears, saliva, bile, piss, pus and pre-ejaculate you pour into it.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Are you going to be any other cartoons/animations in the meantime, or are you focusing only on this project?

    ReplyDelete
  129. You're my biggest inspiration man. I have had a similar problem with my writing over the years, but have slowly been attempting to get back in the swing of things. I'll buy the DVD. Hell, I'd pay $50 for it.

  130. Terrify me. That's all I ask.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Dear David Firth,

I was not sure how to start that, but that's probably my biggest problem, not sure how to start. Anyways, if you are seriously thinking about releasing this to DVD, you have absolutely no idea how big you are. Don't worry about any of that until you are done, but this needs to be in the theaters.

Here's a little story that's relevant. Interstate 60. The best movie I have seen (and believe me if you will, I have seen many many movies). I loved it so much, and I tell everyone about it, and probably of the people I've told, (which is about 6 or 7)I doubt that any of them have went out and seen it.

It was sent direct to DVD. Man, it was by the guy that did Back To The Future and you can tell, because it's awesome. But, for some reason they decided to put it out for DVD. For Shame. For Shame, I say. Because, I have seen shows that were worse, in fact everything that I have seen in theaters was worse. So I state what the fuck!?!? The truth is, I think that he was misguided. Someone, or a bunch of people maybe told him, "Oh, you should just put that direct to DVD, because I don't think that it's any good."

He didn't know that those people reviewing his film were all monks, living in a convent, who believed that the only thing that was GOOD was movies and shows about God, on the religious t.v. channels, starring men who they presumed were priests, and containing women who were abstinent. Kinda like those people who make humming sounds all the time.

  136. Mr. Firth, you have a wide and bright (or dark , according to your comics ;] ) future ahead of you. I wouldn't be suprised in the least if you come out to be the new and edgy Nick Park.

    Break a leg out there.

  137. Mr Firth, as a long time fan of the Salad Fingers episodes, let me be just say its about time. I have been a commercial artist (album covers and the like) for some time, and can really appreciate the departure from mainstream media that you have chosen for yourself. My real question for you is this: What media most influences your work, and were you impacted early on by someone in the film industry. I sense influences from film noir and wondered if you were drawing from a particular source for your style, or is it a creation entirely of your own.

    ReplyDelete
  138. David, I was just Twittering about a bit, seeing as though Radio 1 seem to mention it every 5 seconds and I have thusly baah'd along with millions of other people, and I noticed that you arn;t on there. Well not under David Firth at least.
Now I would suggest you get yourself an account before someone lese does and claims to be you. ALso I would be interesting to see what a man like yourself gets up to in a day.
I'm sure there's a little light torture to your victims in the basement with your morning coffee, just to get the creative juices going of course. I just wondered what other activities you might get up to throughout the day.

  164. I must say I love your animations, but I would like to present a critique view now that you are embarking on a long feature movie, which is playing on another league. Your style captivates the attention. Your cartoons easily take you to another world, a very personal one, nothing is expected but all is within certain logics. Now, for a long movie, your animations usually lack a distinct background message. It is impossible to keep a sustained attention on a movie without a message that is unfolding, and I am not referring merely to a plot, but also to a higher (or deeper) message that permeates along the story. On another note, I see you enjoy experiments and I would dare to recommend you to try to show positive human values, make an uplifting cartoon. It might be ridiculous and worthless, or it might become a revolution. Who knows. And as we say in Spanish, "Animo!"

    ReplyDelete
  165. You my favorite flash artist in the weird department. I'd wish if your movie would look more like your "Health Reminder". It's my fave. I like how it's made in a narrative manner. And how it is random yet never tries to take the viewer from the point.

Please don't make an uplifting cartoon, like Victor here recommends. Only if you you're able to do it perfectly, like in Blade Runner or Scanner Darkly for example.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear you're still creating.

    ReplyDelete
  166. Have you thought of the following things?
Your cartoons in my opinion work well for two
main reasons. The atmosphere and their length.
The atmosphere could be attributed to the fact
your ambient sound music is often music by mainstream artists. Might you come across problems
with permission or will you have your own music?
The length of your cartoons is one of their strengths. Not enogh time to get bored. Be careful.
However, I am a fan of you work and wish you luck.

    ReplyDelete
  167. I've absolutely loved your work from the very beginning, and as your animations have become more and more in-depth and artistic, I've come to love them that much more. I understand that there are people who love your work specifically because it's short, but without any shadow of doubt, I can promise that I will most certainly be purchasing this film when it releases.

    ReplyDelete
  168. I am not aiming this movie at 13 year old gothy hot topic salad fingers fans that are bored when nothing "creepy" is happening. Nor am I aiming it at the people that couldn't be bothered to watch any cartoon I made that was over 3 minutes. These things are not an issue to me. I do not aim to satisfy the ADD generation, in fact I am not specifically aiming to satisfy anyone. I am making something that I would want to see.

    ReplyDelete
  169. hey bro, i get what you mean, it's not like you could make a movie with most of your cartoons, their meanings are too deep for most of the idiots that watch your videos as they think it's a random compilation of animations with weird sound slapped on it. it's not right? i liked spoilsbury toast boy because it's plot made sense, otherwise, can't wait.

  172. hey dave, just a quick question.

I noticed you said you would be using flash and after effects. If you dont mind, could you give a very brief insight into your animating technique. I use flash and also i use a after effects, but mive never used either together, is the main reason for parenting symbols together? if so how do you go about importing each segment seperately?

sorry if this is too much haha, just a thought as i am also interested in finishing a lot more animations, and it would help with parenting issues out of the way.

I am also offering my music for use with anything you do for free :-)

if you need anything specific let me know and I will make it.

  174. Hey, I've been following your work since 2005 and I've been addicted ever since. You're cartoons have always left me wanting more so I couldn't be more excited to hear you're making a full length feature.

    Can't wait!

    ReplyDelete
  175. What makes you think that people are less interested the longer your cartoons are? I'm usually sucked into them to the point where I almost have to snap myself out of it when it ends.

I just rediscovered you so it's been awesome seeing the new stuff you've made. I like how salad fingers has evolved (by listening to comments?) to another madman in the aftermath of a devastating war. Or maybe I missed the point completely and you've punched your computer enraged at my wrongness.

I know some of your stuff is spontaneous but for the parts with a deeper meaning do you mind going into what you're trying to say? Some of them are somewhat obvious but I feel others like spoilsbury toast boy are a bit beyond my grasp. As in, I like it a lot but have absolutely no idea what's going on. I get that there probably isn't one giant message underlying it but I seriously have absolutely no fucking idea what's going on. I get it if you feel that explaining would kinda spoil the whole thing. So yeah...you're awesome.

Oh yeah it'd be nice to see some of the things you have that are almost or partway done especially if you don't think you're ever going to finish them.

    ReplyDelete
  176. Hey Mr. Firth. I'm Chris Burks, 16, I live in Alabama, and I've always been a fan of your stuff since I first saw some of your stuff back when I was more into animating, around 14 or so. Since then I've become more of musician than anything, though I sketch and draw reasonably well, stuff that most people consider very professional. This is all stupid shit about me, I thought it would be interesting to know all the different kinds of people you entertain with all your stuff. From the goofy milkman thing to the hilarious Christmas cartoon, the roof tiling/berries one, and crooked orcus rot, it's all really incredible.

A friend of mine and I both visit this site fairly regularly to check for new cartoons, and to see that something like this is in the works, it's very exciting news. I'm definitely going to be buying it as soon as it comes available, and getting as many people as I can to check it out, too.
